Jonah, Living in Rebellion

Scripture Reading: Jonah 4:1-11 Focal Verse: Jonah 4:1

But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry

Jonah had a strange reaction to revival. He became angry. Why? 1) Because God didn't do things Jonah's way, 2) because Jonah knew God was gracious and kind and would spare Nineveh. Jonah continues in his petty ways by saying, "O Lord take, I beseech thee, my life from me." What a sad day in the kingdom.

Remember, this book is more than a fish story. Do we have the spirit of Jonah, rebellion, living in us?

Notice the signs of a rebellious spirit.
  1. Jonah was more concerned about himself than 120,000 lost people (vv.1-3). Notice how many times he uses the word "I". In God's Kingdom, we must be more concerned for the King and the King's agenda than ours.

  2. Jonah received great joy over a gourd (vv.5-6).
When we focus on things more than God, we will soon be in rebellion (Matt.6:33).

  3. Jonah was more concerned for a dead gourd than 120,000 lost people (vv.7-11). Before we judge Jonah too fast, let us examine our own witness to a lost world. We are more concerned about a T.V. program than lost souls. We are more concerned about shopping than lost souls (Preacher, I don't have time to go visiting). Lord help us!
Do we have the spirit of Jonah?
  1. God is concerned for lost people.
  2. God wants to use us to go tell the good news.
  3. God is all-powerful. He used the wind, the rain, the sea, the fisherman, the great fish, a gourd, a worm and His Word (Rom.8:28).
  4. God is the God of second chances.
  5. God will bring judgment if we rebel.
  6. God wants revival for His people.
  7. God loves all people.

May we examine our hearts next to God's truth in the book of Jonah?
